Ginchy Gal of the Week: Lauren Bacall

Saturday, January 6, 2018

Hey there princess!

Lauren Bacall, born Betty Joan Perske (1924 - 2014), was an American film actress and singer. I have been obsessed with her movies, and her deep sultry voice for years now, and just had to share a little Bacall with you this morning.

She began her career as a model before landing her first role as leading lady to Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not (1944). After this box office success, she went on to be the queen of the noir genre in films such as The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948). She even married Bogart in 1945, after falling in love with him on the set of their first film together.

While courting Bacall on the set of To Have and Have Not, Bogart gifted her a bracelet with a whistle charm on it, engraved with "If you need anything, just whistle." Now that's romance!

Bacall also expanded her acting-chops and appeared in one of my favorite films, How to Marry A Millionaire (1953) alongside Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable. Bacall never won an Oscar, but remains one of the most popular, recognizable faces of Hollywood's golden age.

She was everything that was needed of her for the noir genre: sexy, cool, and collected, with passion and fire burning from within and shining in her eyes. She is absolutely the kind of refined that all young women want to emulate.

Ginchy Gal of the Week: Barbie

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Hey there princess!

In March of 1959, the face of America changed forever when Barbie stepped out onto the scene. Today, she is the figurehead of Mattel, and has been the leader of the toy industry for over fifty years.

Barbie was created by Ruth Handler, who's daughter, Barbara had grown tired of playing with her baby dolls and wanted a "grown-up" toy to play with. Since that fateful day, Barbie has taken on thousands of roles, from stewardess to princess. Her ability to transform is limited only by your imagination, and her wardrobe is just as boundless.

Be like Barbie:

  • Never stop smiling.
  • Know that you can truly be anything you want to be.
  • When in doubt, add glitter.
  • Don't be afraid to try new things.
  • Get yourself a hunky Ken to cuddle with in the Dream House.

Ginchy Gal of the Week: Little Egypt

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Hey there princess!

This week's ginchy gal is a little risque, but a princess nonetheless!

Farida Mazar Spyropoulos a.k.a. "Little Egypt" was a belly dancer in the late nineteenth century. Originally form Syria, she stole the show at World's Columbian Exposition Midway in Chicago in 1893 with her dance that started the phrase "hootchy-kootchy," in reference to the way her hips moved. Until her breakthrough on the American stage, the term "belly dancing" hadn't yet entered our vocabulary, but Little Egypt was sure to set that straight.

After her retirement, there were many other belly dancers to carry on the name "Little Egypt," all as wonderfully curvaceous as the next!

Be like Little Egypt:

  • Steal the show.
  • Realize that they way to a man's heart is through your stomach.
  • Create a fabulous stage name.
  • Make a little scandal.
  • Leave a legacy.
